Known as Madame Moustache, Dumont opened a gaming establishment aptly named Vingt-et-Un, in Nevada City, California, where she introduced the game of the same name.
Her establishment had a large clientele, spreading the game’s popularity across the American West. Dumont’s influence and reputation as one of the first female dealers in the country played a crucial role in embedding Blackjack into the fabric of American gaming culture.
However, as time went on, Vingt-et-Un was not found to be as popular as other card games. That changed when casinos began to offer special bonuses to attract players.
One such bonus was a 10-to-one payout if a player’s hand consisted of the Ace of Spades and a black Jack. This bonus led to the game being referred to as Blackjack, and despite the bonus fading out, the name stuck.
